Technology vs. Quality of Life: Health and Ergonomics

relating to Computer Use

Computer is a Programmable, multiuse machine that accepts data. It manipulates a raw facts and figures into a useful information, and it probably increases the users productivity. The computer is supposed to make us efficient. Unfortunately, it had caused some users - journalist, data encoder,postal workers- to experience and suffer from Repetitive Strain Injuries, Eyestrain and Headaches, and Back and Neck Pains.

· Repetitive Stress (Strain) Injuries (RSI)

this occurs when muscle groups are being forced throughfast and repetitive motions. This injury strikes on your wrist, hand, arm and neck. This caused trouble more often, during those long hours of work.

· Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)

consist of debiliting condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, that may cause the damage and pain to nerves and tendons in the hands. This condition occurs when the carpal ligament creates a tunnel accross the bones of the wrist. When the tendons passing through the carpal tunnel become swollen, they press against the median nerve which runs to the thumb and the first three fingers

· Eyestrain and Headaches

these problems are more common among computer users. Supposedly our eyes were made to see most effectively at a distance but most of the computer user use their eyes at close range for a long time. And as a result this people develop computer vision syndrome.

· Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)

causes eyestrain, headaches, double vision and other problems caused by those close range used of computer screens for too long with poor resolution screens.

· Back and Neck Pains

this pain was caused by the improper positioning of keyboards and screens, also with the improper used of chairs.

All of this accuired pains and sufferings of the computer users upon using computers can be avoided by just ....
